quotientThe result of a division.

indexThe small raised number showing how many times a number is multiplied by itself, as in 7².

inverse operationMultiplication and division are inverse operations.

positive × positive = positive e.g. 6 × 7 = 42
positive × negative = negative e.g. 9 × (−4) = −36
negative × negative = positive e.g. (−8) × (−5) = 40
The same three rules apply to division.
In a chain of multiplications, count the negative factors: an even number of negatives gives a positive answer, an odd number gives a negative answer.
Watch the brackets: (−4)² = 16 but −4² = −16.
